STUDIO MOTIF’Sより

STUDIO MOTIF

Competitions or Joy? | Finding the Right Balance in Music Education

"Should my child enter music competitions?"

This is one of the questions we hear most often from parents.

Competitions can be wonderful opportunities. They give students a clear goal, encourage discipline, and help them gain valuable performance experience.

But they are only one part of a musical journey.

Perhaps the greatest achievement isn't winning a trophy, it’s developing a lifelong love of music.

What Competitions Can Teach

Competitions offer experiences that regular lessons often cannot.

• Setting meaningful goals

• Building consistent practice habits

• Learning to perform under pressure

• Developing confidence and resilience

Even when students don't win, preparing for a performance teaches valuable life skills.

Music Is More Than a Score

Some of the most meaningful musical moments never receive a prize.

Think about:

• Playing a favorite song with family

• Performing with friends at school

• Singing with confidence for the first time

• Bringing joy to others through music

These experiences help develop creativity, communication, empathy, and emotional well-being.

Success Isn't Always About First Place

Unlike many sports, music isn't measured only by scores or rankings.

A better question to ask is:

"Am I better than I was yesterday?"

Learning one new song.

Feeling more confident on stage.

Playing with more expression.

These are meaningful successes too.

Two Different Paths

Competition Focus | Lifelong Music Making

Clear goals | Learn at your own pace

Builds discipline | Encourages creativity

More performance opportunities | Strong social connections

Sense of achievement | Greater long-term enjoyment

Neither path is better than the other.

Many students enjoy both at different stages of their musical journey.

How Parents Can Help

✔ Praise effort, not only results.

✔ Avoid comparing children.

✔ Ask, "Did you enjoy today's lesson?"

✔ Celebrate small improvements.

Children often remember encouragement much longer than rankings.

Sometimes the words "I'm proud of how hard you worked" mean far more than "You won."

STUDIO MOTIF’S Perspective

At STUDIO MOTIF, we believe every student's musical journey is unique.

Some students dream of competitions and performances.

Others simply want to enjoy music, gain confidence, or express themselves creatively.

Both goals are equally valuable.

Our role is to support each student according to their interests, helping them grow not only as musicians but also as confident and compassionate individuals.

Final Thoughts

Competitions can inspire growth, challenge us, and create unforgettable memories.

But they are not the destination.

The greatest success is discovering a lifelong relationship with music, one that continues to bring joy, connection, and confidence long after the trophies have been put away.
